Are All NRTLs the Same?

If a new product can be added to an existing Certification File and belongs to the same product category, the ongoing certification costs generally remain unchanged.

The annual fees and Follow-Up Service requirements typically remain unchanged.

Why Are There Ongoing Costs?

An NRTL certification program does not end with the issuance of the certification.

Throughout the lifetime of the certification, ongoing activities are required, including:

Which Safety Standards Are Applied for NRTL Certification?

Neither is true.

Are UL Standards Exclusive to UL?

No.

This is probably one of the most common misconceptions about the North American certification system.

Although many safety standards begin with the designation “UL”—such as UL 62368-1, UL 61010-1, or UL 508A—they are not exclusive to UL.

Other OSHA-recognized NRTLs, including Intertek, CSA Group, TÜV Rheinland, and TÜV SÜD, may also evaluate products to these standards, provided they are recognized by OSHA for the applicable scope.

In other words, the standard does not belong to the NRTL performing the certification.

Yes.

International Harmonization

Over the past several years, many North American safety standards have been aligned with, or fully harmonized to, international IEC standards.
